A finance background, put to work for consumers
Before becoming a lawyer, Shawn built a career in finance. That background shapes how he defends debt lawsuits: he reads account statements, interest and fee calculations, and the paperwork debt buyers use to claim they own an account the way a finance professional does — looking for balances that don't add up, charges that weren't allowed, and gaps in the chain of ownership.
Many debt lawsuits are filed on thin evidence and won by default because the person sued never answers. Shawn's approach is to make the plaintiff prove its case: file an answer on time, demand the documents, raise every defense that applies — including the statute of limitations — and negotiate from a position of strength when settling is in the client's interest.
What Shawn handles
- Debt lawsuit defense — credit card, personal loan, auto deficiency and medical debt lawsuits in justice, county and district courts
- Post-judgment settlement — resolving judgments and challenging default judgments
- FDCPA and Texas Debt Collection Act claims — holding abusive collectors accountable
- Business debt defense — lawsuits against Texas businesses and their owners
Shawn also founded FCRA Attorneys, a firm that helps people fix credit report and background check errors under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
