A Lewisville resident sued over a credit card usually finds one of two things on the citation: a Denton County justice court, possibly the one with an office in Lewisville itself, or a county or district court that sits up I-35E in the city of Denton. Which one you got decides how long you have to answer and how the case will run.
Texas Debt Law defends Lewisville residents against credit card banks, debt buyers, collection agencies and lenders, for a flat fee and mostly from a distance, by phone, email and e-filing.

- County: nearly all of the city is in Denton County. A small part reaches into Dallas County.

If Your Case Is in Justice Court
Denton County is divided into six justice precincts, and the county directory lists offices in Denton, Frisco, Lewisville, Flower Mound, Cross Roads and Carrollton. A justice court debt claim is usually filed in the precinct where you live, though the rules give plaintiffs a few other options. Lewisville sits near the Flower Mound and Carrollton precinct offices too, so read the precinct number on your citation instead of assuming your case is at the Valley Parkway office. The county's precinct search shows which precinct covers your street.
Justice courts can hear claims up to $20,000. When a bank, debt buyer, collection agency or lender sues there, the case follows the special "debt claim" rules, which require the plaintiff to plead specific facts about the account and, for a debt buyer, about the sale of the account. Your written answer is due by the end of the 14th day after you were served (Tex. R. Civ. P. 502.5).
A practical note from the Precinct 3 court's page: it says civil filings by email stopped being accepted on September 1, 2022, and civil e-filing goes through the state's e-file system. When we represent you, we file electronically.
If Your Case Is in County or District Court
Bigger balances, such as a large personal loan or a vehicle deficiency, and some smaller suits too, end up in a county court at law or a district court. Denton County lists both at the Denton County Courts Building, 1450 E. McKinney Street, Denton.
These courts follow the full Texas Rules of Civil Procedure. Your answer is due by 10:00 a.m. on the Monday after 20 days have passed since service (Rule 99(b)). Plaintiffs in these courts often move for summary judgment; for motions filed on or after March 1, 2026, the response is due 21 days after the motion is filed (Rule 166a). Missing that window can end a case without a trial.
The drive north is one reason people put off dealing with a case. You usually don't have to make it. Answers, discovery, motions and settlement talks happen in writing and by e-filing, and we tell you in advance if a hearing needs you there.
Living on the Dallas County side
If your Lewisville address is in the small Dallas County portion, a suit may be filed in one of Dallas County's ten justice courts or in its civil courts in downtown Dallas. The county named at the top of your petition tells you which.
Find Your Date
Our answer deadline calculator estimates the deadline from your service date and court type. If it has already passed, call anyway; a default judgment may not have been signed yet, and if it has, it can sometimes be challenged.
Our Defense, Step by Step
- Stop the default. We file your answer on time.
- Demand the documents. A debt buyer has to connect your account to itself with records, not just a summary spreadsheet.
- Check the age of the debt. The general limit is four years (Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 16.004), and a debt buyer may not sue on time-barred consumer debt (Fin. Code § 392.307).
- Check the numbers. Interest and fees added after charge-off must be supported by the agreement.
- Resolve it on your terms. Dismissal where the evidence falls short, trial where needed, or a written settlement when that serves you better.
If a collector called you at work, threatened you or misrepresented what you owe, you may have claims of your own under the FDCPA and Texas Debt Collection Act. Those are a separate legal service from debt defense.

Lewisville Questions
My citation says "Justice of the Peace, Precinct 3." Where is that?
Denton County lists the Precinct 3 office at 400 N. Valley Parkway in Lewisville. If your citation names a different precinct, your case is in that precinct's court, which may be in another city.
Is any part of Lewisville in Dallas County?
Yes, a small part. If you're not sure which side you're on, your property tax statement or voter registration card shows your county, and the court name on your petition settles the question for your lawsuit.
Can they take my car or my house?
Texas protects a homestead and up to $50,000 in exempt personal property for a single adult, or $100,000 for a family, which can include vehicles (Property Code chapters 41 and 42). A judgment creditor can still go after non-exempt assets and bank accounts, and wages can't be garnished for consumer debt.
There's already a judgment. Now what?
We look at whether it can be set aside and, if not, negotiate a payoff. See post-judgment debt settlement and our debt lawsuit Q&A.
