Mesquite sits just east of Dallas, where I-30 and I-635 cross the eastern edge of Dallas County. If a credit card company or debt buyer sues you here, the case could be heard in a justice court on South Galloway Avenue, a few minutes from home, or in a courthouse in downtown Dallas. The court printed on your citation controls everything that follows.

At Texas Debt Law, we defend Mesquite residents in consumer debt lawsuits for a flat fee. We speak Spanish, and we answer the phone seven days a week.

Three Things to Find on Your Citation

Before you do anything else, look at the top of the citation and petition for these three items.

1. The county

Mesquite has about 150,140 residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2024 estimate. Nearly all of them live in Dallas County. A small part of the city lies in Kaufman County, so a handful of Mesquite residents could be sued there instead. If your papers say Kaufman County, tell us when you call; the courts, clerks and local procedures are different.

2. The type of court

"Justice Court" means a case for $20,000 or less under the justice court rules. "County Court at Law" or a numbered "District Court" means the case follows the full civil rules, with a different answer deadline and more formal motion practice.

3. The precinct and place

Dallas County runs ten justice courts, two in each of its five precincts. The two seats in a precinct are called "places." According to the county's justice court directory, the court for Precinct 2, Place 2 sits at the Mesquite Government Center, 500 S. Galloway Avenue, Suite P200. A justice court debt case is usually filed in the precinct where the defendant lives, but not always, and not every Mesquite address falls in Precinct 2. The county's precinct lookup tells you which precinct covers your address.

Downtown Dallas Courts

If the plaintiff filed in a county court at law or a civil district court, your case is downtown. Dallas County lists its County Court at Law No. 1 and its civil district courts, such as the 116th, in the George L. Allen, Sr. Courts Building at 600 Commerce Street. You can check a case's status on the Dallas County courts portal.

That's a commute from Mesquite, but much less of one than people fear. Nearly everything in a debt case is done on paper. We file electronically, handle discovery and negotiation by phone and email, and let you know well in advance if a hearing requires you in person.

How Long You Have

Count from the day you were served, not the day the suit was filed:

  • Mesquite justice court, or any other justice court: by the end of the 14th day (Tex. R. Civ. P. 502.5).
  • County court at law or district court: by 10:00 a.m. on the Monday after 20 days (Rule 99(b)).

In county and district court, a motion for summary judgment filed on or after March 1, 2026 must be answered within 21 days after it is filed (Rule 166a). Our answer deadline calculator does the counting for you.

What We Look For in a Mesquite Debt Suit

Many credit card suits are brought by debt buyers who purchased the account in bulk long after the original bank stopped collecting. That history leaves gaps, and gaps are where defenses live:

  • Ownership. Does the plaintiff have the bill of sale and the records tying your specific account to it?
  • Time. Texas generally allows four years to sue on a debt (Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 16.004). A debt buyer can't sue on a time-barred consumer debt at all (Fin. Code § 392.307).
  • Amount. Is the balance supported by statements, or just by a number in an affidavit?
  • Conduct. Did a collector threaten you, call your employer or misstate the debt? That can support a separate claim under the FDCPA and Texas Debt Collection Act, which is its own legal service, outside the debt-defense fee.

Depending on what we find, we push for dismissal, defend the case at trial, or negotiate a written settlement. Our firm has had hundreds of debt lawsuits dismissed, though every case turns on its own facts.

Mesquite FAQs

Will I have to go to the Mesquite Government Center?

Only if your case is in the Precinct 2, Place 2 court and a hearing needs you there. Many debt cases are resolved through filings and negotiation. If a court date comes up, we prepare you and tell you exactly where to go.

I live in Mesquite, but my case is in a justice court in Dallas. Is that allowed?

It can be. The rules let a plaintiff file in a few places, though the defendant's home precinct is the usual one. If the case was filed somewhere it shouldn't have been, we can raise that.

Can a judgment creditor take my paycheck?

Not for consumer debt. Texas protects current wages from garnishment. Bank accounts are a different story, so a default judgment is worth preventing.

I ignored the papers and now have a judgment. What can I do?

Call us. Depending on timing and how you were served, the judgment may be challenged. If not, we can work toward a post-judgment settlement, billed at the same flat fees as debt defense.
