Missouri City sits on a county line. Of its roughly 78,582 residents (U.S. Census Bureau, 2024 estimate), about 92% live in Fort Bend County and about 8% live in Harris County. If a bank, debt buyer or collection agency sues you, the county where you live usually decides which court system handles the case, which clerk takes the filings and which local practices apply.
Texas Debt Law defends Missouri City residents in both counties. We charge flat fees, answer the phones 7 days a week, and handle most of the work by phone, email and electronic filing.

Fort Bend or Harris: Two Different Court Systems
Both counties use the same Texas rules and the same answer deadlines, but they organize their courts differently.
If you live on the Fort Bend side
Fort Bend County lists seven justices of the peace in four precincts: Precincts 1, 2 and 3 each have two places, and Precinct 4 has one. A credit card or personal loan suit under $20,000 will usually be in one of these justice courts. Bigger claims go to one of the county's six county courts at law or one of its ten district courts, which the county lists at the Fort Bend County Justice Center in Richmond, the county seat.
If you live on the Harris side
The Harris County Justice Courts are a separate system of 16 courts: eight precincts with two places each. Harris County also has its own County Civil Courts at Law for larger civil cases. A Harris County case has its own case number format, its own clerk and its own online records, so don't expect to find it on the Fort Bend website.
The citation tells you which system you are in. The first line names the court, for example "Justice Court, Precinct 2, Place 1, Fort Bend County" or "Justice Court, Precinct 1, Place 2, Harris County." Copy it down exactly. It matters for your deadline and for where your answer gets filed.
Was the Suit Filed in the Right County?
A creditor doesn't get to pick any court it likes. Fort Bend County's justice courts post a rules of venue page that summarizes where different suits may be filed. Under those rules, the general rule is the county and precinct where a defendant lives, and a suit on a contract for goods, services or loans for personal, family or household use may be brought where the contract was signed or where the defendant lives.
Federal law adds a separate limit for debt collectors. Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, a debt collector suing a consumer must generally file in the judicial district where the consumer signed the contract or where the consumer lives (15 U.S.C. § 1692i). So if your home is in the Fort Bend part of Missouri City and a debt buyer sued you in a Harris County court, that is worth a closer look. It may be a defense, and in some cases it may support a claim of your own. Claims like that are a separate service from our debt-defense fee; see our FDCPA and Texas Debt Collection Act page.
Deadlines Don't Change at the County Line
- Justice court, either county: your answer is due by the end of the 14th day after you were served (Tex. R. Civ. P. 502.5). Justice courts hear claims up to $20,000 (Gov't Code § 27.031).
- County court at law or district court, either county: your answer is due by 10:00 a.m. on the Monday after 20 days have passed since service (Tex. R. Civ. P. 99(b)).
- Summary judgment in the higher courts: for motions filed on or after March 1, 2026, a response is due 21 days after the motion is filed (Rule 166a).
Count from the date you were handed the papers or the date service was completed, not the date printed on the petition. Our answer deadline calculator will give you an estimate.
What We Do on a Missouri City Case
- Confirm the court. We read your citation, match it to the right county and precinct, and check whether venue is proper.
- File your answer. A timely answer stops a default judgment and requires the plaintiff to prove its case.
- Test the plaintiff's proof. Debt buyers often sue on accounts bought in bulk. We ask for the account agreement, the statements and the assignment records that tie your account to the company suing you.
- Check the dates. Texas generally allows 4 years to sue on a debt (Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 16.004), and a debt buyer may not sue on time-barred consumer debt (Fin. Code § 392.307).
- Resolve it on your terms. If a negotiated resolution makes more sense than going to trial, we negotiate and put the terms in writing. You decide.
Flat-Fee Pricing
Your fee depends on the amount of the lawsuit, not on how many hours the case takes. Flat fees start at $400, and payment plans are available.

Free Public Resources for Missouri City Residents
- Lone Star Legal Aid lists its Houston office as serving Harris County. Fort Bend County was served by its Richmond office, which has closed; the organization says it still serves those counties through online intake and its toll-free line, 1-800-733-8394. Eligibility rules apply. Lone Star Legal Aid offices.
- Law libraries: Fort Bend County's Willie Melton Law Library is inside the Justice Center in Richmond, and the Harris County Law Library serves the public in downtown Houston.
- Forms and guides: TexasLawHelp.org publishes free information for people who are representing themselves.
These are independent public resources. We don't run them or decide who they help.
Missouri City Questions We Hear
My mail says "Missouri City," but I'm not sure which county my house is in. How do I find out?
Your property tax statement or appraisal district record shows the county. You can also just send us the citation. The court named on it, and the address where you were served, usually tell us everything we need.
I was sued in Fort Bend County, but I moved to Houston after I opened the card. Does that matter?
It might. Venue usually turns on where you live when the suit is filed or where you signed the contract. If neither points to the county where you were sued, we'll raise it.
Do I have to drive to Richmond or downtown Houston?
For most steps, no. Answers, discovery and many motions are handled electronically. If the court requires you at a hearing or trial, we'll tell you in advance and prepare you.
Can a creditor garnish my paycheck if it wins?
Not for consumer debt. Texas protects current wages from garnishment (Tex. Const. art. XVI, § 28), and your homestead and up to $50,000 in personal property ($100,000 for a family) are generally exempt (Property Code chs. 41 and 42). Bank accounts can still be at risk. If a judgment has already been entered, see post-judgment debt settlement; that work uses the same flat fees as debt defense.
