Unlike most of its neighbors to the north, Pflugerville is a Travis County city. Nearly all of its roughly 66,819 residents (U.S. Census Bureau, 2024 estimate) live in Travis County, with a small part of the city in Williamson County. So while a lawsuit against someone in Round Rock or Hutto usually lands in a Williamson County court, a debt suit against a Pflugerville resident is usually a Travis County case.

Texas Debt Law defends Pflugerville residents sued by credit card issuers, debt buyers and collection agencies, for one flat fee. We e-file in Travis County and work with clients by phone, text and email.

A Travis County Case Means an Austin Courthouse

Travis County has five justice of the peace precincts, and the county describes their civil work as including lawsuits over debts. Each of the five precinct pages lists an Austin address; none is in Pflugerville. Which precinct hears your case depends on where you live, and the county posts a precinct map to check. Justice courts can hear claims up to $20,000 (Gov't Code § 27.031).

Bigger cases go to the county's civil county courts or district courts. Travis County says its civil and family courts are located at 1700 Guadalupe Street in downtown Austin (civil courts page).

For someone in Pflugerville, that can mean a drive into Austin if a court requires you in person. It doesn't mean a drive to answer the case: we file electronically. Travis County's Precinct Two court, for example, posts information on its page about remote hearings by Zoom (Precinct Two). Whether a particular hearing is remote is up to the court.

If You Live in the Williamson County Part

A small part of Pflugerville lies in Williamson County. A suit against someone living there may be filed in a Williamson County justice court (the county has four precincts) or, for larger claims, at the Justice Center in Georgetown. The deadlines below apply either way.

Deadlines That Can't Slip

Match the court named on your citation:

  • Justice Court (Justice of the Peace): answer by the end of the 14th day after service (Tex. R. Civ. P. 502.5).
  • County Court at Law or District Court: answer by 10:00 a.m. on the Monday after 20 days from service (Rule 99(b)).

In county and district court, watch for a motion for summary judgment as well. For motions filed on or after March 1, 2026, a response is due 21 days after the motion is filed (Rule 166a). Our answer deadline calculator will find your answer date.

Building a Defense

We answer first, so a default judgment is off the table. Then we look at the plaintiff's case piece by piece:

  • Standing. If a debt buyer is suing, does it have documents tying your account to each sale?
  • Proof of the balance. Do the statements support the number in the petition?
  • Who is vouching for the records. Is the affiant someone with real knowledge of how the records were kept?
  • Time. Texas generally allows four years to sue on a debt (Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 16.004), and a debt buyer can't sue on time-barred consumer debt (Fin. Code § 392.307).

Weak answers to those questions can lead to dismissal. Where settlement makes sense, we negotiate it and get it in writing.

Pflugerville Questions

Why does my Pflugerville lawsuit say "Travis County" when my neighbors in Round Rock deal with Georgetown?

Because nearly all of Pflugerville is in Travis County, and Round Rock is almost entirely in Williamson County. The county determines the court system.

Could my debt case be in Pflugerville's municipal court?

No. Municipal courts handle city ordinance violations and Class C misdemeanors such as traffic tickets. A creditor's lawsuit over a credit card or loan is a civil case and goes to a county's justice, county or district court.

Can I handle a hearing remotely?

Sometimes. Some Travis County justice courts publish remote hearing instructions, but the judge decides how each hearing proceeds. We'll tell you what your court expects.

Will the plaintiff be able to garnish my paycheck?

No, not for a consumer debt. Texas law protects current wages (Tex. Const. art. XVI, § 28). Bank accounts are the usual risk after a judgment. Your homestead and up to $50,000 in personal property ($100,000 for a family) are generally exempt (Property Code chs. 41 and 42).

I found out about the case after the judgment. Is it too late?

Not necessarily. We look at whether the judgment can be challenged and at post-judgment settlement options, for the same flat fees as defense.
