Horizon City is on the east side of El Paso County, and the county's main courthouse is in downtown El Paso. If a creditor has sued you, the case may be sitting in a court you've never been to, on a schedule you didn't choose. Texas Debt Law defends Horizon City residents sued over credit cards, personal loans and other consumer debts. We charge a flat fee, speak Spanish, and handle the filings electronically so you can keep working while we work on the case.

First Question: Is It a Letter or a Lawsuit?

People in Horizon City call us with all kinds of paper. The difference matters:

  • A collection letter, even one from a law firm, is not a lawsuit. It may still be worth answering in writing, but no court deadline is running.
  • A citation is a court document. It names the court, the case number and the plaintiff, and it comes with a petition. If you were handed one, or one was left for you, a deadline is running.

Not sure which you have? Text us a photo. We'll tell you what it is.

Where Horizon City Cases Are Heard

Horizon City had about 24,802 residents in 2024, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and it lies entirely within El Paso County. The county seat is El Paso. El Paso County's Justices of the Peace page gives 500 E. San Antonio in downtown El Paso as the general address for its justice courts and lists justices for seven precincts, two of them sharing Precinct 6.

Which precinct has your case depends on your address, not just your city. Read the court name on your citation. The justice court limit is $20,000, and nearly every credit card suit falls below it. Anything larger goes to a County Court at Law or a district court, and the county's Courts Directory shows which County Courts at Law hear civil cases.

Looking Up Your Case

You don't have to drive downtown to see what's been filed. El Paso County's Records Search page links to civil case searches for the County and District Clerks and to re:SearchTX, a statewide case search platform. If you'd rather not dig through it, send us the case number and we'll pull the file.

How Long You Have

Count from the day you were served:

  • Justice court: through the end of the 14th day (Tex. R. Civ. P. 502.5).
  • County Court at Law or district court: until 10:00 a.m. on the Monday after 20 days (Rule 99(b)).

Our answer deadline calculator helps you estimate the date. If nothing is filed by then, the plaintiff can request a default judgment.

Our Approach

  1. Answer on time. This stops a default judgment and preserves your defenses.
  2. Test the plaintiff's standing. If a debt buyer is suing, it has to prove it owns your account.
  3. Check the dates. The general limitations period on a debt is four years (Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 16.004), and debt buyers can't sue on time-barred consumer debt (Fin. Code § 392.307).
  4. Challenge the evidence. We look closely at the affidavits and records the plaintiff relies on.
  5. Watch the motion calendar. In a County Court at Law or district court, a summary judgment response is due 21 days after the motion is filed (Rule 166a, for motions filed on or after March 1, 2026).
  6. Resolve it on your terms. Dismissal when the proof fails; a written settlement when that's better for you.

What a Judgment Can't Touch

Your house and your paycheck both have strong protection in Texas: current wages can't be garnished for consumer debt, and a homestead is exempt. Personal property, including vehicles, is exempt up to $50,000 for a single adult or $100,000 for a family. What a creditor can reach is non-exempt money in the bank.

If a judgment is already on file, we can review it and negotiate a post-judgment settlement for the same flat fees as debt defense. If collectors have crossed legal lines, read about FDCPA and Texas Debt Collection Act claims, which are a separate service.

Horizon City FAQs

Do I have to go downtown?

Usually not. We file electronically and negotiate by phone and email. If the court requires you at a hearing, we'll let you know well in advance.

I work during the day. When can I reach you?

Our phones are answered 7 days a week, and you can text a photo of your papers whenever it suits you.

My spouse was sued, not me. Should I worry?

The lawsuit is against the person named as the defendant. If only your spouse is named, your spouse is the one who needs to answer. Questions about joint accounts or shared property are worth raising during the free case evaluation.

Is there a page for Socorro or El Paso?

Yes: see our Socorro page and our El Paso page. General questions are in our debt lawsuit Q&A.
