Socorro has been around a long time. A Texas Historical Commission marker dates the founding of its mission to October 13, 1680. Debt lawsuits here are a much more modern problem: a credit card balance sold to a debt buyer, a car repossessed and sold for less than the loan, a personal loan that fell behind. Texas Debt Law defends Socorro residents in these cases for a flat fee, in Spanish or English, and handles the case through El Paso County's electronic filing system so you don't have to spend your days at the courthouse downtown.

The Basics for Socorro
- Population: about 38,642 residents in 2024, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
- County: El Paso County, entirely. The county seat is the city of El Paso, northwest of Socorro along the Rio Grande.
- Most debt cases: one of El Paso County's justice courts, for claims up to $20,000.
- Larger cases: a County Court at Law or a district court.
Which Court? Look at the Dollar Amount, Then the Caption
Under $20,000: justice court
El Paso County's Justices of the Peace page lists the elected justices for Precincts 1 through 7, with Precinct 6 split into two places. A justice court debt case is generally filed in the precinct where the defendant lives, and the precinct is printed on your citation. The county page also links to an address lookup through the county elections office if you want to confirm your precinct.
Over $20,000: County Court at Law or district court
The county's Courts Directory sorts its County Courts at Law by the cases they hear. County Courts at Law 3 and 6 are listed for civil cases only, and County Court at Law 7 for both civil and criminal cases. A larger auto loan deficiency or a high-balance credit line may land in one of those courts or in a district court.
Why it matters: the court level sets your deadline and the rules that apply.
Deadlines That Apply in El Paso County
- Justice court: your answer is due by the end of the 14th day after service (Tex. R. Civ. P. 502.5).
- County Court at Law or district court: your answer is due by 10:00 a.m. on the Monday after 20 days from service (Rule 99(b)).
In a County Court at Law or district court, a response to a motion for summary judgment is due 21 days after the motion is filed (Rule 166a, for motions filed on or after March 1, 2026). Estimate your answer date with our answer deadline calculator, then confirm it with us.
Three Common Socorro Situations
"I don't recognize the company suing me."
That's often a debt buyer. It has to prove that it bought your specific account and that the balance is right. We ask for the purchase records, the account agreement and the statements.
"My car was repossessed, and now they want more."
After a repossession, a lender may sue for the difference between the loan balance and what the car sold for. We look at how the sale was handled and whether the numbers in the petition add up.
"This debt is ancient."
Texas generally allows four years to sue on a debt (Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 16.004). Suing on time-barred consumer debt is something debt buyers are forbidden to do under Finance Code § 392.307. Limitations has to be raised in your answer, so the deadline still matters.

Handled Remotely, Explained in Spanish
Our office is in Frisco, but Texas courts use statewide e-filing, and most debt cases are resolved on paper and by negotiation. We file your answer, exchange documents with the plaintiff and negotiate by phone and email. If a hearing requires you in person, we'll tell you ahead of time. Throughout the case, we can explain each step in Spanish.
If There's Already a Judgment
Texas law still protects current wages from garnishment for consumer debt, your homestead, and personal property up to $50,000 for a single adult or $100,000 for a family. Bank accounts are where creditors usually go next. We can look at whether the judgment can be challenged and negotiate a post-judgment settlement, for the same flat fees as debt defense.
Collector harassment, threats or false statements may give you a claim under the FDCPA and Texas Debt Collection Act. That is a separate service.

Socorro Debt Lawsuit FAQs
Will my case be heard in Socorro?
Not necessarily. Justice court cases are assigned by precinct, not by city limits. Your citation names the precinct and court, and we'll confirm where it is.
The papers say "County Court at Law No. 7." Is that a criminal court?
The county lists County Court at Law 7 as hearing both civil and criminal cases. A debt suit there is a civil case. It follows the 20-day Monday answer rule.
I live near Horizon City. Is there a difference?
Both cities are in El Paso County, so the same courts and rules apply. See our Horizon City page or our El Paso page.
